Instant hijab in three steps

How to sew a hijab? This question interests most Muslim women, especially those who live in non-Islamic countries.

This issue will also be of interest to those needlewomen readers who love to sew. Perhaps you are among that category of people who want to modernise the technology of sewing a head covering.

No matter who you are, creating this important headdress in the life of a Muslim woman will be possible for both beginners and professionals.

The difference between this hijab is that there are rings at both ends that are worn on the head. Of course, like any other hijab, it cannot be worn without hats, caps, etc. There must be something underneath that will cover our hair from prying eyes.

What you will need

  1. Fabric 75 x 150 cm. Depending on the season, you can choose any fabric, preferably natural. Common “chill”?: staple, linen, cotton will do. The cooler it is outside, the thicker the fabric and vice versa. A life hack for beginners or those who do not have an overlocker?: you can take a ready-made scarf. They are available in secular accessories stores.
  2. Chalk or thin soap. They are easily erased from fabric without leaving marks.
  3. A centimetre tape.

How to sew

  1. Measure on a piece of fabric or finished scarf along the length of 4 cm from the edge and mark it. Next, from this mark we measure 56–58 cm (the standard head circumference size for an adult) and put a second mark. From the other edge, without turning the fabric (scarf), we perform the same operation.
  2. Having folded the fabric, we join together the first and second marks from one edge, then from the other, to form loops. You can secure the fabric with a needle or pin to keep the marks firmly in place.
  3. Finished scarf: sew a stitch along the marks by hand or on a machine, securing the ends.

Fabric: after retreating 2 cm from the top, sew 1–2 cm by hand or on a machine. Fold the edge that we left on top in half and process it using an overlocker or stitch it on a sewing machine. If the fabric crumbles between the loops, then process the bottom edge as well.
