Sunnas of the Home

To recite the dua before entering the home.

To greet those that are in the house with “Assalaamu Alaikum”. Even though it may be your own house or there is no one at home.

 

Sunnas of the Toilet

Enter the toilet with your head covered.

Enter the toilet with shoes.

Recite the special dua before entering the toilet.

Enter with the left foot.

Sit and urinate. One should never urinate whilst standing.

Leave the toilet with the right foot.

Recite the special dua after coming out of the toilet.

One should not face the qibla or show one’s back towards the qibla.

Do not speak in the toilet.

Be very careful of splashes of urine (being unmindful in this regard causes one to be punished in the grave).

After relieving oneself, cleanse oneself using water.

 

Sunnas of wearing clothes

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) loved white clothing.

When putting on any garment the Prophet ﷺ always began with the right limb.

When removing any garment Prophet ﷺ always removed the left limb first.

Males should wear pants above the ankles. Females should ensure that their lower garment covers their ankles.

Males should wear a “topee” or turban. Females must wear scarves.

When wearing shoes, first put on the right shoe then the left.

When removing shoes, first remove the left and then the right.

 

Sunnas of Sleeping

Sleep in the state of ablution.

Make your bed yourself.

Dust the bed thrice before lying down.

One should change into some other clothes (e.g., pyjamas) before going to sleep.

It is sunna to sleep immediately after the night namaz.

Apply surma to both the eyes.

Brush one’s teeth with a miswaak.

Sleep on the right-hand side.

Sleep with the right palm under the right cheek.

Keep the knees slightly bent when sleeping.

Face the qibla, if possible.

Recite Sura Al-Mulk before sleeping.

Recite Ayatul Kursi.

Recite Sura Ikhlaas, Sura Falaq and Sura Naas before sleeping three times and thereafter blow over the entire body thrice.

Recite Tasbeeh-e-Fathima before sleeping (33 Subhan Allah, 33 Alhamdulillah and 34 Allahu Akbar).

Recite the special dua before sleeping.

Wake up for Tahajjud namaz.

 

Sunnas on Awakening

On awakening rub the face and the eyes with the palms of the hands in order to remove the effects of sleep.

Afterwards recite the special dua on awakening.

On awakening cleanse the mouth with a miswaak.
